Love, Hate & America the Great

There is just something about the election process. Its suspensful, dramatic & truly powerful! Elections are what make this country great & free, and one of the reasons we have enjoyed a dominant posture in the world for the last 200 years.

In my opinion, there is nothing more revealing about the fabric of our nation, and the condition of hearts, than when we choose for ourselves someone to lead us. Elections are the clashing of disagreements and disagreements are like mirrors, revealing our inner attitudes, thoughts and opinions.

As I reflect on the transition of leadership in our country, and what was called the most vicious and contentious presidential election in our history, I am both saddened and challenged by what was revealed by the electoral process .

First, saddened by the ignorance &  hate has spewed from social media outlets, so called main stream news, and from the very people who are supposed to be beacons of peace & reason.

Please understand, I’m not naive to the division that exists in America, but I am surprised at the depth of hate and intolerance that division has produced. “From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”  Speech is a reflection of reality, so say whatever you want, this is where we are as a country. Racism, bullying and divisive speech are issues that we must confront and live above.

A look back in history will reveal that hatred has never produced positive change in a society.

Disagreement is the real test of love. You can tell me you love me , but I’ll reserve judgement until we disagree on something.

The right to use your voice and disagree,  is at the core of freedom. But we must realize and live from the understanding,  that it is possible to disagree and still love.

Disagreement does not equal hate, and tolerance doesn’t equal love.

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn’t mean that they hate you, and if you hate, you disqualify yourself from the capacity to produce any lasting change.

Which leads me to my second reaction. I am challenged. Challenged to be introspective and intentional about modeling healthy discussion with people I disagree with. Challenged to love those around me regardless of race, religion, background or political view. Challenged to address my own fears and bias’s when they manifest. And challenged to confront hate with love, ignorance with reason, and disagreement with grace.

With Love
